~ Meet Sol ~

I am an eco-friendly artist, muralist, musician and jewelry maker from Argentina. My work centers principally around Nature and the restoration of harmony in our relationship to Her. So that my art remains consistent with my values, I employ eco-friendly, vegan, and upcycled materials to make my pieces. In the act of making beautiful art I believe we must not contaminate the very Earth which inspired that beauty.

Hi! I’m Sol Anzorena!

Though I currently divide my time between Kansas City and my forest retreat in Upper Peninsula Michigan, as you will see my life has had many twists and turns. I was born in 1996 in Argentina, though I moved at a young age and spent most of my childhood in Spain. My passion for art started when I was quite little – originally I learned from my mother, who is also a painter, and I then went on to attend an arts-centric secondary school.

I received my degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad de Granada (UGR), Spain. During my academic career I was also fortunate to spend a year studying in Poland at the Uniwersytet Artystyczny w Poznaniu (UAP), and another year at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), Faculdade de Artes Plasticas in Salvador of Bahia, Brazil. Following graduation, I underwent extended travels in India and Nepal.

My studies in diverse cultures have provided me with a lifetime of inspiration moving forward. But more importantly, I’ve seen with my own eyes that, though we may speak different tongues and follow different flags, we are all inhabitants of a single Planet Earth, and it is to Her that our greatest allegiance must lie.

I’m a nomad…

Traveling has truly changed my life. I love being exposed to different cultures and getting out of my comfort zone. Every time I go on a trip I return home with so much new inspiration! Many of my favorite pieces are the fruit of these journeys, such as my Asia sketchbook. I traveled for seven months without a smartphone, camera, computer, or any other gadget, in an attempt to disconnect from our hyper-technological world and re-connect with myself and my immediate surroundings. In this sketchbook I captured special moments from my trip in India and Nepal using a unique technique called Blind Drawing, in which one draws without looking at the paper while trying not to lift up the pen. The results are spontaneous, aleatoric compositions – sometimes wild, sometimes elegant, but always interesting!

I originally started painting murals while backpacking in South America. I will always remember my first mural – at the time I had barely created pieces bigger than an A3, but my host offered to buy the materials for me to create a mural at his cottage in the Bolivian jungle and so I just went for it! And I’m so glad I did: the experience gave me great confidence in my abilities, and I went on to paint murals in Europe, Asia, and North America.

I started playing music during that same South American trip, about 8 years ago, and now it is a fundamental part of my life. I’m grateful that I can express myself through many different mediums, because each one allows me to tell my story through a new lens.

Even though now I spend most of my time either in Kansas City or on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan, where I have a small cabin nestled amongst the old growth forest, I’m always getting ready to pack up and go on another adventure!

Techniques such as Blind Drawing help me explore the boundaries of my creativity without any self-restraints. Here the important thing is the act of creating and not so much the final result.

Besides from being an artist, I’m an animal rights advocate and activist. I’ve donated many artworks to fundraisers for animal sanctuaries in Kansas City like Shy38inc. I also create pieces that speak about the importance of preserving habitats that are being destroyed by human carelessness. These artworks aren’t usually for sale but I’m always glad to create new pieces for animal rescue organizations and habitat protection efforts.
